I absolutely loved working with Dalina, the founder of Your Latina Nutritionist! Her mission and passion for supporting Latina women in their nutrition journey in an American culture where tortillas and mofungo are considered “unhealthy” was inspiring and I learned so much.
our goal
Body positive illustrations were not common online yet and my client wanted to help her Latina clients overcome their internalized bias against their own body shapes. She wanted to make sure that a range of body types and color profiles appeared in her social media presence but didn’t know how to do that since she herself is thin bodied.
PROPOSED SOLUTIONS:
We decided to create custom illustrations, branding that included these illustrations and editable templates she could use in Canva so she didn’t need new illustrations for every post. We also chose to find and request body positive photography online.
STIGMA RELATED CHALLENGES
At first, we found that the illustrations with darker skin tones and larger body types did not do as well on social media. This made sense because of the stigma and bias around both.
Instead of switching back to slender and light-skinned body types, we created content that utilized trends on Instagram within the nutrition industry at the time to create environments where these body types could overcome bias a bit better.
The trend that worked the best for us was drawings of women holding letterboards with quotes on them.
OUTCOMES
Dalina slowly started receiving messages from her audience about what the illustrations meant to them. As the conversation about body positivity and equality grew online so did her audience numbers. Fans started flooding in because they saw how she had already been an actively inclusive dietitian. Her Instagram following hit the 10K mark before we even finished working together. She is viewed as an innovator in her industry because of her body-positivity and devotion to supporting the Latina community.
